Dieter Mayer
Dieter Mayer, MD, FEBVS, FAPWCA, is a Swiss vascular surgeon and wound healing specialist with more than 36 years of surgical experience and 31 years of dedicated expertise in wound care. He is currently Research Associate and Attending Physician at the Department of Dermatology, University Hospital Zurich. From 2001 to 2016, he served as Director of Wound Care at University Hospital Zurich, where he established one of Switzerland’s first truly interdisciplinary university wound clinics. From 2016 to 2021, he was Director of Vascular Surgery and Wound Care at the Cantonal Hospital of Fribourg. Dr Mayer has held major national and international leadership roles, including President of the Swiss Association for Wound Care and Director of the Scientific and Ethics Committee for WUWHS 2022 in Abu Dhabi. He received the WUWHS Special Award in 2022. He was lead author of the 2024 Journal of Wound Care international consensus document Best practice for wound debridement, which introduced the concept of integral debridement. He was also lead author of the 2026 Journal of Wound Care publication on Continuous Integral Debridement, launched at EWMA 2026, advancing wound bed preparation through the Cleanse, Debride, Cleanse and Dress cycle.
