Prof. Dr. Ewa Klara Stuermer, MD, PhD is the Surgical Director of the Comprehensive Wound Centre (CWC), which is affiliated with the Department of Vascular Surgery at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany. Until 2011, she worked as a general, trauma and orthopedic surgeon, as well as head of the Trauma Research Lab at the University Medical Center Goettingen, where she completed her habilitation in “Surgery” in 2009. In 2015, she was appointed a professorship in 'Translational Wound Research' at Witten-Herdecke University. In 2022, she took up a professorship at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf. There, she heads the Lab for Translational Wound Research, serves as the surgical director of the Comprehensive Wound Center, and leads the university’s wound consultation service. Together with her team, she treats over 70 wound patients each week. Since 2022, she has also been a member of the EWMA Council, the German Society for Surgery and the German Initiative for Chronic Wounds. Professor Stuermer is an international lecturer, scientist, and principal investigator in clinical trials. The focus of her current research includes wound biofilms, bacteriophages, antimicrobial agents, cold atmospheric plasma, wound odour, skin and wound microbiome, omics, inflammation and skin infections, probiotics, adult stem cells, and in vitro and ex vivo 3D models.
