Marjana Tomic-CanicProf Dr

Marjana Tomic-Canic, PhD is the William H. Eaglstein, M.D. Chair in Wound Healing, Executive Vice Chair for Research, Innovation and Academic Affairs, Professor of Dermatology, and Director of the Wound Healing and Regenerative Medicine Research Program at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. An internationally recognized leader in wound healing and regenerative medicine, Dr. Tomic-Canic has dedicated more than 30 years to advancing the understanding of human skin repair, chronic wounds, and diabetic wound healing. Her pioneering research established the field of the human wound genome, identifying key genomic and epigenetic mechanisms that contribute to impaired healing and providing a scientific foundation for debridement as a standard of care. Her work spans biomarker discovery, inflammation, aging, host-microbe interactions, and translational approaches to tissue repair. Dr. Tomic-Canic has been continuously funded by the NIH for more than 25 years, authored over 180 peer-reviewed publications, and mentored more than 100 trainees and junior investigators. A member of the Wound Healing Society for over 25 years, she has served as Program Committee Chair, Annual Meeting Co-Chair, Board and Executive Board member, and President (2016-2017). She is currently Senior Editor of Wound Repair and Regeneration and Co-Chair of the WHS International Relations Committee. She was elected an inaugural WHS Fellow in 2025 and received the WHS Lifetime Achievement Award (2022) and WHS Distinguished Service Award (2025). She serves as WHS Delegate at the WUWHS2026.
