Dr. Christoph Schmitz, MD, has held the Chair of Anatomy II at the Medical Faculty of Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich (LMU Munich; Munich, Germany) since October 1, 2010. In addition to his research on post mortem brain alterations in patients with schizophrenia and autism, Dr. Schmitz has devoted substantial efforts to investigating the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders using extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) and, more recently, autologous stem cell therapies. His research focuses on elucidating molecular and cellular mechanisms of action and translating these findings into clinical practice. Dr. Schmitz has published extensively on these topics in collaboration with colleagues from all five continents. Currently, more than 230 of his publications are indexed in PubMed, including 50 on ESWT [1]. Two of his ESWT publications – on plantar fasciopathy and knee osteoarthritis – achieved 9 out of 10 points on the PEDro database scale [2], representing the second-highest score ever awarded to ESWT studies in that database. On ResearchGate, Dr. Schmitz is currently listed with 368 publications, more than 93,000 reads, and more than 14,200 citations [3]. According to Google Scholar, he holds an h-index of 67 and an i10-index of 159. As a principal investigator, Dr. Schmitz has secured over €3.5 million in third-party research funding.
