Dr Eriksson was born in Sweden where he received his medical and research training. He then moved to the US for general surgery and plastic surgery training. After three years of Academic Plastic Surgery in Gothenburg, Sweden he worked as Director of the Burn Center at Southern Illinois University in Springfield, Illinois for four years. In 1986 he was appointed Chief of Plastic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s and Children’s Hospitals and Professor at Harvard Medical School. In 1996 he was made the first Joseph Murray Professor of Plastic Surgery at Harvard Medical School . At the Brigham he established several programs including the Wound Care Center, and The Face Transplantation Program.
Dr Eriksson’s research is focused on wound healing using methodology ranging from gene transfer to controlling and treating the wound microenvironment after acute trauma. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and is the first author on over 50 patents. He has received a large number of awards including the Boswick Lifetime Achievement Award from the Symposium for Advanced Wound Care and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Wound Healing Society. He has been a President of the Wound Healing Society and the Wound Healing Foundation.
