Prof. VK Shukla

Prof. Vijay Kumar Shukla, former Rector (Pro Vice-Chancellor) and Officiating Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), is a renowned academician, a surgeon par excellence, and an accomplished administrator. He had been as the Director of the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University; Medical Superintendent of Sir Sunderlal Hospital, BHU; and Head of the Department of Surgery, Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU, Varanasi, India.

Prof. Shukla completed his M.S. (Surgery) from the Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU, Varanasi, India, and subsequently obtained his M.Ch. from the College of Medicine, University of Wales, Cardiff, UK. He worked as a Clinical Research Fellow, Smith & Nephew Fellow, and Cancer Research Campaign Fellow at the University Hospital of Wales, and also served as a visiting faculty at the University of California, San Francisco, USA.

With over 43 years of clinical, teaching, and research experience, Prof. Shukla has been a pioneer in advancing surgical practice and academic excellence at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He has performed more than 25,000 surgeries. He also established the first multidisciplinary Wound Clinic at Sir Sunderlal Hospital, BHU, and validated Ayurvedic therapies for chronic wounds. His research includes studies on the role of heavy metals, trace elements, cytomodulin, arginase and bacteriophage therapy in wound healing and scarring.

Prof. Shukla has published over 509 research papers, five books, 24 book chapters, and one monograph, with an h-index of 52. He has guided 10 Ph.D. scholars and more than 62 MS/MD students. A Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) and the College of Wound Care Specialists (Malaysia), he is serving on the governing bodies of AIIMS, New Delhi, and NEIGRIHMS, Shillong, India.

He has received several prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards, including those from the World Union of Wound Healing Societies Conference, Abu Dhabi (2022); Global Wound Conference, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2018); All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh (2018); and the 3rd Congress of the World Union of Wound Healing Societies, Toronto, Canada (2008), among others. Globally recognized for his contributions to surgery, wound healing research, and academic leadership, Prof. Shukla continues to be a highly respected institution builder and medical leader.
