Richard Benskin was an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with the Austin, Texas Fire Department for 13 years. During that time, he participated in several short-term medical mission trips. He then led his family as they moved to a remote conflict area of Ghana, West Africa, where he and his wife, Linda Benskin, assisted with a Christian clinic in an Islamic area and taught village health workers. During their five years in Ghana, Richard helped edit their Handbook for Health Care in Developing Countries and repaired and updated infrastructure. Since then, as the Research Associate and Technical Specialist for the Benskin Research Group, Richard Benskin has facilitated wound research conducted in developing countries worldwide. He is the co-developer of the Available Technology Dressing (ATD) technique, a safe, effective, and acceptable method of dressing wounds using only materials that are readily available in remote village markets (or Dollar Stores).
